Ground Cherries

As you pretty people know I peruse my local farmers market just about every Saturday. This week I picked up a nifty little treat…

I’m going to be honest with you, when I saw them I had absolutely no idea what they were. I asked the woman selling these golden nuggets of deliciousness and she said “ground cherries, grown on a local Amish farm.”

Well twist my arm.

You know how important it is to incorporate variety into your diet and what better way than by eating something you never have before?! Ground cherries for the win.

Ground cherries are part of the nightshade family which also includes tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplant. I don’t even know how to describe their flavor. They are sweet but not tart like red cherries. Honestly, I think the best way I can describe it is if a tomato and a cherry had a fetus it would be a ground cherry. Yay fetuses!

One cup of these little guys has about 75 calories, vitamins A and C, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, calcium, iron, and phosphorus.

You can eat them plain, use them to top this recipe or you can try out these recipes:
Ground cherry salsa
Ground cherry and goat cheese salad

Enjoy!
