How To Not Be A Wrinkly Hag 101

Bone Broth! It will change your life. I bet Steve Job’s mom drank bone broth. And Steve Weatherford’s mom. And probably yo mama. It will make you beautiful. And your kids beautiful. And your kids kids beautiful. And lets be honest who doesn’t want to be purrty? But before I tell you how I have to tell you a story.

It is no coincidence I want to talk to you about bone broth today. It is one of the best things you can do for your health and I feel compelled to be sharing this information with you right now because of the horrible, terrible, no good, very bad, anti-nutrition behavior I was forced to engage in today. This is really hard for me to write. Today, I had to say 6 words I have never said before. Today, I said 6 words I will never forgive myself for saying, ever.

“Do you want fries with that?”

I’m not joking. It was horrible. So horrible that I actually burst out laughing right after I said it. I couldn’t stop. The customer just looked at me like I was crazy. Why, why, WHY!!!! As you know I’m doing this dietetic internship. Part of the internship is food service management rotations, which is what I am in now. One of the reasons I chose this program is because the majority of time is spent in clinical rotations and they had the shortest management rotations of any school I looked at. So today I had to observe a team lead in the hospital cafeteria and for the busiest part of lunch she helps serve on the grill line. So guess what I had to do? My two diplomas might be better served as fire-starters. The worst part is I’ve never worked in food service before and let me tell you I have so much respect for people who do. First, you miss normal meal times because you’re feeding other people so you’re a saint for not biting my head off for that to begin with. Second, you deal with people who don’t even look you in the eye, not even when you smile at them. Third, you’re on your feet all day. And fourth, see #1. I’m the worst at your job. I’m slow, I spill things everywhere, and I don’t have a freaking clue how to do anything. I’m fairly certain the only reason I didn’t get my head bitten off today is because I’m funny so I at least entertained them. Thank all things holy that I only had to do it for an hour. Also, fun life fact- hoagies and subs are the same thing. They’re called subs in NY and hoagies here in WV. Remember that so you don’t make an ass out of yourself like I did when someone asks you for a hoagie and you have no idea what it is. Anyway, I’m still scarred and I will never forgive myself for practically encouraging consumption of fries. Please forgive me for my nutritional trespasses. Please accept the gift of health that is bone broth as penance for my sins.

So why am I so passionate about bone broth? Bones are full things that make you healthy. And pretty. Things like-

Collagen- Collagen makes up about 1/3 of the protein in your body. If you want to be pretty and not look like a droopy, wrinkly, old hag early on get your bone broth on. Collagen in your skin keeps it tight, smooth, and wrinkle free. Collagen is also in your organs, ligaments, and tendons. If you were lucky enough to be hit by a car like I was you know the importance of having strong tendons and ligaments. The stronger your collagen is the less susceptible to injury you are. Joint pain? Take two cups of bone broth and call me in the morning. This shit is an anti-aging elixir of life. Collagen fibers take an incredibly long time to heal once damaged so protect them now before you get arthritis and put yourself in a wheelchair prematurely. Activity fo life. Oh, and good collagen means better healing scars. Clearly Lily and James Potter didn’t drink bone broth. Speaking of parenting, if you’ve got a crib midget with an awkward head to body ratio (they all do) I’d highly recommend adding some of this liquid gold to their diet. It will help with those growth spurts and magically turn them into an appropriate proportioned human with strong joints which can help protect them for a lifetime. And cellulite? PEACE.

Calcium & Phosphorus- These are the two most abundant minerals in the bone. They make your bones strong. Think about it. Not everyone drinks milk. Dark, leafy greens are one of the next best sources of calcium but they still fall short of hitting daily needs. So what’s a lactose intolerant (or someone who dislikes milk) to do? Like I said, liquid gold. Adding an acid to your stock pot (I use apple cider vinegar) will draw the minerals from the bones into the liquid and make the bones crumble when you pinch them. Our ancestors weren’t dumbasses when they used the WHOLE animal after a kill. And their bones and muscles were a lot stronger than ours are now. And remember what I said about muscles. Biddies love ’em.

Other Cool Things- I want to get really dweeby and talk about things like proline, glycine, immune health, allergies, improved digestion and hair and teeth health but this post is already getting obnoxiously long thanks to my narcissistic need to talk about my personal life. Just know that bone broth contains, plays a role in, or can do all of the above. It’s the shit.

But hey, DO NOT BUY STOCK FROM THE STORE! IT IS NOT THE SAME THING, WAS NOT MADE IN THE SAME WAY, THERE ARE CRAPPY THINGS IN IT, AND DOES NOT HAVE THE SAME HEALTHY COMPONENTS.

Sorry for yelling at you. But this is serious. Sorry. Will you forgive me if I give you a present? Yes? Excellent because I have asked the spectacular Jarret O’Hara, Sous Chef at Mirbeau Inn & Spa, to put together a little how-to for you! His beautiful girlfriend, Ashley, is one of my favorite people in the world and she agreed to write his bio because I wanted it to really brag about how awesome he is.

Aren’t we adorable? Here is what she had to say about Jarret-

Aside from being an intense football fan, Syracuse basketball lover, master of craft beer consumption, and most importantly my lover, Jarret is one incredible chef and my inspiration in the kitchen. It all started for him growing up learning to cook and create delicious but budget conscious meals with his family. After going to BOCES for the Culinary Arts program in high school, he contemplated going to the CIA to pursue his passion. However, his other passion, playing football, took a front seat when he was recruited to play by the coaches at Morrisville State College. While playing football Jarret earned a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management and shortly thereafter did a culinary internship at the Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, WV. He has experience cooking cuisine from many regions and ethnicities and is currently a Sous Chef at Mirbeau Inn and Spa in Skaneatles, NY. I am without a doubt, a much healthier eater and (learning to be) a better cook thanks to his influence and support. Also, he’s kinda handsome. 😉

I can second that. Stop in later this week and see what this big guy has to say!
